What is Incontinence Associates Dermatitis (IAD)?

An incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a form of inflammation of the skin due to contact with urine and faeces in people who are incontinent of urine or faeces or both.

What is Pressure Injury?

A pressure injury is also known as a pressure ulcer, pressure sore or bed sore. A pressure injury is the localized damage to the skin due to prolonged pressure. The pressure can come from lying in bed, sitting in a wheelchair for prolonged time, etc.

What happens if an incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) or pressure injury is left untreated?

The skin can break open and become infected. It can extend into the muscle and bone. A very serious condition called septic shock can occur. In the worst cases, it can become life-threatening.
